Bariatric surgery is a term used to describe the differant types of surgery that a patient can choose to facilitate long term weight loss. Bariatric surgeons are specialists in this area and are often NHS trained consultant surgeons with general surgical experience but with a focus on weight loss surgery.

Morbid obesity is a medical term to describe patients who are seriously overweight and who need to lose weight as a matter of urgency. If morbidly obese patients do not lose weight they run a serious risk from conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and cronic heart disease. One option often considered by these patients is bariatric surgery and a bariatric surgeon is often consulted to advise the patient on the various options for bariatric surgery.

Bariatric surgical techniques include gastric bypass surgery, gastric band surgery, liposuction, obesity surgery to name but a few. Bariatric surgery must be taken seriously and is only really a last resort if diet fails to achieve the long term weight loss that the patient is seeking.

Bariatric surgery and other forms of weight loss surgery must be accompanied by some post surgery diet and excercise programs so that the patient maintains the weight loss.
